    Tuesday Picks for Beer Week

Good morning Beer Geeks! How’s the ol’ liver holding up?

Tuesday is the 6th day of LA Beer Week, and the lineup is looking pretty solid.

    Surly Goat

Tonight at the Surly Goat, David Walker and Jace Milstead of Firestone-Walker will hold a mock blending session, giving you a peek behind the curtain into one of their anniversary beer blending sessions. For anyone who’s ever read the rolled up page that comes inside the box each year, this is a can’t miss event.  Available on draft this evening: Abacus, Bravo, Parabola, XIII, and more.  8pm

    Eagle Rock Brewery

So you want to open a brewery, eh?  If you’ve read the Eagle Rock blog, you know what a challenge it was to get everything up and running.  From permits to inspections to city hall meetings, there’s a lot of work that goes into it.  Drop by the brewery tonight to learn from the following recently opened breweries:  Nibble Bit Tabby Brewery, Strand Brewing, Brouwerij West, Ladyface Ale Companie, as well soon-to-open Beachwood Brewing and Ohana Brewing.  Panel discussion will be moderated by Tomm Carroll of Celebrator Beer News.  7pm at the Eagle Rock Tasting Room. A Weeknight Cheese Pairing

Putting together a beer & cheese pairing is a piece of cake.  All you gotta do is find a beer you’ve never tried before, and then figure out which of your current cheeses taste best with it.

For me the beer was the Sierra Nevada / Charlie Papazian / Fred Eckhart 30th Anniversary collab, an Imperial Helles Bock.  The cheeses in my fridge?  Sliced Sharp Cheddar, some gooey Silver Goat chevre, and String.

Now, if I’ve learned anything from the Hot Knives, it’s that there’s two ways to match beers & cheeses.  You can go for complimentary or contrasting flavors.

As it turned out, the string cheese wasn’t string cheese at all, it was a cube of Jack.  Delicious as always, but clearly not the right choice for this prickly Belgo-German cinnabomb.  The Cheddar fared better, cutting through the malty booziness just fine.  The Chevre tasted downright awful when washed down with Charlie, Fred & Ken’s finest.  But I’ll keep some chevre on hand to go with Jack & Ken’s killer Black Barleywine.  Think cream cheese on a toasted chocolate chip bagel.

Cheddar won this round, but with the amount of cheese consumed in this household, there will be a whole new field of competitors next time a 750 gets cracked.

    Coming Next Thursday…

Hot Knives put on their fanciest pants and pair up with The Bruery for a sold-out beer & cheese symposium at Verdugo Bar.

OK, so even though it’s a cinch to throw things at the wall and see what sticks, it’s tough to duplicate the Alcho-Lacto Oblivion that is a Hot Knives beer & cheese pairing.  To illustrate how amazing this LA Beer Week event will be, I’ve compiled a few helpful graphics to compare and contrast.  (More …)

Any idea what time this event starts? Tried calling Verdugo and no response. No time listed anywhere!

TONIGHT: Stone and Let’s Be Franklin @verdugobar

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Daily Pint last Wednesday for the Vertical Epic release!  The weiners flowed like beer, and the beer flowed like wine.  And you wondered why they call it hump day.

verdudo_logoBeing an equal opportunity beer group, we didn’t want to give the Westside the only chance to mix & match delicious Stone Beers with mouth watering Let’s Be Frank dogs.  So this week we take the party east into Glassell Park to visit another LA bastion of incredible beer, Verdugo Bar.

If you east-of-the-405-ers didn’t make it out last week cause the Pint is too far away, now you’ve got something else to complain about.  Trekking over the hill into Glassell Park.  Well quit your whining!

Anyone who’s been to Verdugo knows it’s always worth the trip, especially for an event like this.

Absent last week but in full effect this week is frequent LBF tag-along, Coolhaus, which will be there to help extinguish the flames after a couple of Devil Dogs or Smoked Porter with Chipotle.

To top it all off, there will be a late night DJ tribute to Aretha Franklin courtesy of Devil’s Pie.  (rumors of free cupcakes?)

Continue on for the list of Stone Beers on tap, plus their suggested hot dog pairings, courtesy of the Verdugo Bar events page. (More …)

Beer and Hot Dog Dinner x 2!

Let's Be Frank / Stone Brewing DinnerYa han comido tacos con cerveza, and you’ve already slurped down your fair share of real beer floats.

Now it’s time to test out a new pairing – Hot Dogs & Beer.

Starting next week, you’ll have two opportunities to match up Let’s Be Frank hot dogs with some of San Diego’s finest.

Stone Brewing is a great match for this beer dinner with Let’s Be Frank, both companies are well known for their commitment to higher quality products and supporting local producers.

Let’s Be Frank @ The Daily Pint

On Wednesday, September 9th, the Weinermobile (well, it’s actually more of a trailer) will be parked in front of the Daily Pint (twitter, facebook) from 7pm on.  Let’s Be Frank will be using Stone beers in the preparation of their food, and each dog will have a corresponding beer pairing on tap at the Pint.  Exact menu will be released closer to the date.

Let’s Be Frank @ Verdugo Bar

For all you folks on the eastside of town, if you can’t make it out to the Pint, the Let’s Be Frank trailer will be making it’s way to Verdugo Bar (facebook, twitter) the following Wednesday, September 16th.

More information to come, but for now you can check out the Beer Geek LA event pages on Facebook:
